Volume XVIII Issue 3, June/July 2009

We've made some changes! While the print version of the News (see below to download latest issue) still covers all town organizations, this website will focus on community events and Bolton history.
For information about town government—trash collection, boards and commissions, Senior Center, Recreation Department, etc.—see the town's website at http://bolton.govoffice.com.
For now, we'll continue hosting the Bentley Library page, the Conservation Commission Corner, and the Bolton Business Yellow Pages.
Be sure to check this home page for news of important events that occur between regular issues.

NEW "BOLTON HORIZONS" TO REPLACE BOLTON COMMUNITY NEWS

Great news! Horizons Media & Publishing LLC, based in Tolland, Conn., will fill the void left by the closing of the Bolton Community News with the new Bolton Horizons, a bimonthly newspaper that will be delivered free to every household in town.

Horizons Media & Publishing, established in 2002, produces five publications in eastern Connecticut: Coventry Monthly, Tolland Monthly, Willington/Ashford/Mansfield Horizons, Vernon/Rockville Horizons, and Ellington Horizons. The company currently produces 55,000 magazines in seven towns, 10 times a year.

John Barrett, publisher and co-owner of Horizons, was delighted to take on the responsibility of providing local news to Bolton, a task formerly performed by the Bolton Community News. Barrett noted, "Eileen Stanley should be applauded for her efforts in producing the newsletter for 18 years. This shows her tremendous commitment to her town and fellow residents."

Barrett's business partner and editor Linda Yau said, "This is a great opportunity for Horizons, not only in terms of our company's expansion, but also in keeping with our philosophy of building community. We are happy to help the Bolton community continue the dissemination of town and lifestyle information."

Horizons will maintain Bolton Community News's existing publishing and advertising price schedules. For further information or questions, please contact Horizons Media & Publishing Editor Linda Yau at (860)742-1788.

    June 1, 2009

The June/July issue is my final one as managing editor of the Bolton Community News (BCN). Producing this newsletter for 18 years (and its website for nine years) has been a true labor of love for me. Only those who have worked on it—and there have been a number over the years—can understand the degree of dedication and number of hours it requires. The time has come for me to dedicate those hours to other endeavors.

The BCN was conceived by a small group of residents in 1991, when Bolton was undergoing a particularly divisive struggle over support for the school system versus rising property taxes. Shouting matches at public hearings and vitriolic letters in local newspapers painted a highly unflattering picture of Bolton, one that we did not believe accurately reflected our community.

Our goal was to foster a greater sense of fellowship and civic pride in our town. We envisioned the BCN as a way to keep citizens informed not only about issues of governance, but also about events where they could come together outside of politics—like pasta dinners and concerts and sports—and remember everything that can be good about a small community. Political opinions or editorials would not be published.

All of the labor for this endeavor is, and always has been, volunteer. Production costs are funded entirely by our loyal advertisers and contributions from generous civic groups and individuals. Not a penny of your tax dollars is spent on this newsletter.

There are some people looking at ways to continue publishing the BCN. Keep an eye on this website for more information as it becomes available. If they decide to carry on, I encourage you to contact them and offer your assistance. The BCN continues to grow in size, and it has become a very large undertaking. I can testify that working on this newsletter is a very rewarding experience. It is also a great way to meet new people and become involved in your community.

Regardless of what happens to the print version, I will continue to update this website at least through the summer. A permanent home will be found for the history pages, photo albums, and other pages of lasting interest to the residents of Bolton.

    Eileen Stanley,
    Managing Editor
